Mitsubishi Electric Invests in Sakana AI for Industrial Applications
Mitsubishi Electric has invested in Sakana AI to integrate advanced foundation model technologies into its Serendie digital platform. The partnership targets manufacturing, infrastructure, and other sectors where complex operational decisions require AI support.
Sakana AI will contribute next-generation foundation models. Mitsubishi Electric will provide industrial expertise, customer relationships, and operational datasets accumulated over decades.
The collaboration positions manufacturing and physical AI as a new strategic focus for Sakana AI, alongside its existing work in financial services and defense. Ren Ito, Sakana AI co-founder, said the partnership combines "Mitsubishi Electric's manufacturing knowledge and extensive datasets with our next-generation AI technologies" to move AI from research into practical deployment.
Satoshi Takeda, Senior Vice President and Chief Digital Officer at Mitsubishi Electric, framed the investment as part of the company's broader digital transformation. "By strengthening our Serendie digital platform and leveraging generative AI, we are creating new business value and enhancing our competitive position," he said.
The move reflects a broader trend among industrial manufacturers to embed AI capabilities into existing operational systems rather than building separate AI initiatives. Mitsubishi Electric's scale-with established relationships across manufacturing and infrastructure sectors-gives the partnership access to real-world problems where AI solutions can be tested and refined.
For executives overseeing digital transformation, the partnership illustrates one approach to acquiring AI capability: investing in specialized AI firms rather than developing foundation models internally.
