Motorola Solutions Opens Boston AI Hub for Emergency Management Software

Motorola Solutions is opening a research and development hub in Boston focused on AI and cloud-based software for emergency response. The facility will develop technologies that help schools, hospitals, and public sector organizations manage crises more efficiently.

The company said the hub will accelerate work on its safety platform, which thousands of K-12 schools and colleges currently use to coordinate emergency situations. Boston's location strengthens Motorola Solutions' existing Massachusetts operations and signals expanded investment in AI-driven public safety tools.

Motorola Solutions plans to hire across AI research, software engineering, and product management at the new facility. The company is developing what it calls "agentic systems"-AI tools designed to manage emergencies at scale by converting complex data into actionable intelligence for first responders and enterprise security teams.

Why Boston

Jehan Wickramasuriya, senior vice president of security and resilience software, said Boston's innovation ecosystem made it the natural choice. "The problems we're solving are some of the most challenging and rewarding in any field," he said, adding that the company seeks talent interested in deploying emergency management systems at scale.

Mahesh Saptharishi, chief technology officer, framed the hub as a bridge between data analysis and real-world action. "We're delivering actionable intelligence for those who manage society's most complex security challenges," he said.

What This Means for Product Development

For product development professionals, this expansion reflects how organizations are embedding AI into mission-critical workflows. The focus on converting data streams into usable intelligence for time-sensitive decisions mirrors challenges across industries beyond emergency response.

Motorola Solutions' emphasis on agentic systems suggests product teams should understand how autonomous AI agents can operate within existing organizational structures-a technical and organizational design problem that extends well beyond public safety.
