Australia has reached a critical point in determining how artificial intelligence will shape the future of healthcare, and a new national roadmap argues the country must move quickly to put the right safeguards in place. The National Policy Roadmap for AI in Healthcare, developed by the Australian Alliance for AI in Healthcare with support from Macquarie University's Australian Institute of Health Innovation, the Digital Health Cooperative Research Centre, CSIRO's eHealth Research Centre and RMIT University, calls for stronger governance, workforce training and research to support safe AI adoption across the health system.
The roadmap incorporates input from consumers, more than 96 organisations, 20 peak bodies and government agencies. It reflects the rapid emergence of generative AI and the increasing use of AI across healthcare, and argues that healthcare systems must become much better at responding to rapid technological change.
What the roadmap means for clinicians
For clinicians, the implications are significant. AI will fundamentally change clinical jobs and workflows, and it may inadvertently introduce new stressors that contribute to burnout. The roadmap warns that over-reliance on AI, known as automation bias, will sometimes see clinicians agree with unsafe AI recommendations. There is also a risk that reliance on AI will lead to deskilling in essential clinical reasoning competencies in diagnosis and management.
That risk extends to practicing clinicians, but it may be even more significant for students and trainees who have not yet fully developed these core competencies. The roadmap therefore proposes making AI competency a standard part of clinical education across healthcare professions. It also recommends a national Chief AI Officer training program to create AI leaders across hospitals and health services who can help drive change.
Primary care is on the front line
GPs are often among the first clinicians to encounter new patient expectations and emerging technologies. As AI tools become more integrated into documentation, decision support, patient communication and care coordination, clinicians need clear guidance on what works, what is safe and what delivers genuine value.
The roadmap calls for national best-practice guidance for the clinical implementation of AI and procurement guidance at both state and federal levels so health services can identify proven technologies. It also highlights the growing importance of building Australian capability in healthcare AI, rather than relying solely on technologies and policy approaches developed overseas.
"Healthcare is well known for its inertia to change and so we must find new agile ways to meet these historic challenges," said Professor Enrico Coiera, Director of the Centre for Health Informatics at the Australian Institute of Health Innovation and Founder and Lead of the Australian Alliance for AI in Healthcare. "Our mantra must be: Don't walk. Run."

The roadmap's emphasis on training programs and national leadership signals that healthcare organisations will need to invest in AI capability building, not just technology procurement.
