NC State Names Directors for AI Hub for Science

NC State's College of Sciences has appointed Paul Liu and Emily Griffith to lead the AI Hub for Science, which launched last year to coordinate artificial intelligence research and education across campus.

Liu, a professor of oceanography in the Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, serves as director. Griffith, a professor of the practice in the Department of Statistics, is associate director.

Liu's Background

Liu has authored two books on generative AI and language models and co-developed several AI platforms including OceanAI, OceanGPT, and DeltaGPT. He has delivered more than 10 hands-on AI and large language model workshops across campus and at national venues.

His work focuses on domain-specific AI tools for scientific discovery and workforce development. He holds a Faculty Fellow position in the Center for Geospatial Analytics and has built international research collaborations.

Griffith's Background

Griffith co-directs the Data Science Consulting Program, a joint effort between the Data Science and AI Academy and the university libraries. She has more than 100 collaborative publications with NC State researchers across fields including veterinary medicine, paleontology, toxicology, and entomology.

Her focus is applied statistics and data science collaboration across disciplines.

Hub Priorities

The directors will expand AI research collaboration, integrate AI into graduate and undergraduate education, and develop partnerships to position NC State in AI-enabled scientific work.

Both directors emphasize responsible AI development alongside technical innovation.
