Neno raises €6.6 million for AI-native accounting for European SMEs

Dutch fintech Neno has raised €6.6 million in seed funding to bring its AI-native accounting and tax platform for small and medium-sized businesses to the wider European market. The round was led by AlleyCorp, with participation from Motive Partners, Firstminute Capital, and angel investors from companies including Mollie, Coinbase, PayPal, and Hugging Face.

Launched earlier this year, the startup has signed up nearly 200 customers in the Netherlands. The funding will support expansion into new European markets and the creation of a lab focused on developing what the company describes as "ambient AI" - systems designed to handle financial processes continuously in the background.

The problem with outsourced accounting

More than half of Europe's 26 million SMEs outsource their accounting, payroll, and tax obligations to a professional services industry worth €200 billion annually. Neno argues this operating model creates a compounding problem: fragmented workflows across banking, accounting, tax, and payroll fail to deliver contextual financial insights, while a structural talent shortage makes traditional accountant-to-client ratios unsustainable.

Neno's answer is an AI-native workspace built around a real-time agentic general ledger. It unifies and contextualizes data from business accounts, corporate cards, bill payments, and receivables into a single system of record.

"Instead of business owners coordinating between banks, bookkeepers, and tax advisors, we deliver a single 'done-for-you' state of work where reconciliation, compliance, and reporting happen automatically in the background," said Nick Knuppe, CEO of Neno. "The business owner's only touchpoint is reviewing what's already been handled."

From agentic to ambient AI

The company's near-term approach relies on an agentic collection of AI models that perform explicit tasks like reconciliation and compliance checks. The longer-term ambition is what the team calls "ambient AI" - software that runs continuously in the background, managing these processes without requiring human intervention.

Unlike some product vision pitches, Neno has active customers using its accounting and tax product today. That traction, combined with backing from fintech-focused investors like AlleyCorp and Motive Partners, suggests strong market demand for this particular approach.

What the funding will be used for

The capital will be deployed on two fronts: entering new European markets and launching a lab. Neno is part of a broader wave of fintech startups applying large language models and other AI technologies to automate administrative work in accounting and finance.

The company's growth is expected to be tied to market expansion and product capability - not just by making results more accurate, but by slowly shifting the role of the business owner in financial management from active participant to reviewer.

Why this matters for finance professionals

The embedded financial technology sector is transitioning from tools that provide editing assistance to systems that run independently. The adoption of agentic accounting software by firms like Neno signals a fundamental shift in the industry's operational model: a future where routine record-keeping, compliance reporting, and tax preparation are fully automated systems that require monitoring rather than manual completion.

For finance professionals, a significant advantage of these AI-native workflows is the additional career scope they create - fewer manual tasks mean more room for strategic advisory work. Firms that position themselves as advisors to automated systems - rather than operators of manual processes - will be better positioned as this technology continues to accelerate.
