The National University of Singapore (NUS) will give all students access to ChatGPT and require every freshman to complete a foundational AI course starting this academic year. The move, announced alongside a new partnership with OpenAI on Aug. 11, makes NUS one of the first major Asian universities to embed generative AI tools directly into campus life and coursework.
NUS, ranked first among Asian institutions in the 2027 QS World University Rankings, will provide faculty and staff with access to ChatGPT Edu beginning Aug. 31. The platform, a specialized version of ChatGPT for higher education, operates in a secure, university-managed environment with enhanced privacy, security, and administrative controls. The university said data and conversations within the NUS workspace will not be used to train OpenAI's models.
More advanced AI tools will be tested in selected courses before being gradually rolled out to undergraduate programs where they can best support learning and academic goals, the university said.
"As AI becomes increasingly embedded in how NUS operates, it is critical that we adopt it in a secure, scalable and sustainable way," Tan Shui-Min, NUS Chief Information Technology Officer and Vice President, said in a statement.
Compulsory AI course for all freshmen
Starting in the 2026/27 academic year, all first-year undergraduates must complete a foundational course on generative AI. The module, titled "THE1008 Applied Generative AI: From Prompting to Evaluation," is part of the university's Transition to Higher Education Program and will run before students begin their core coursework.
The curriculum focuses on building practical skills with large language models and multimodal AI tools - specifically, how to interact with them effectively and evaluate their outputs critically. Beyond the freshman requirement, NUS intends to build students' AI capabilities throughout their degree programs via both the common curriculum and individual majors.
By graduation, students are expected to use AI tools strategically, assess AI-generated information with care, and apply the technology appropriately within their fields. The university said this approach will also reinforce human-centered skills including critical thinking, judgment, and sense-making.
Professor Aaron Thean, NUS Deputy President (Academic Affairs) and Provost, said: "We aim to leverage these advanced AI technologies not as replacements, but as powerful amplifiers of human intellect, creativity and judgement. By providing direct, hands-on access, we enable our students, faculty and staff to develop the critical thinking and ethical discernment essential to innovate and lead in an AI-driven world, ensuring human capabilities remain at the forefront."
Beyond a single vendor
The university's long-term plan involves diversifying its AI partnerships, Channel News Asia reported. Rather than relying on OpenAI as a sole provider, NUS intends to collaborate with multiple companies to expose students to a range of AI platforms - a recognition that the tools students will encounter in the workplace will come from many sources.
The broader campus rollout is part of NUS's effort to embed AI competencies across the curriculum rather than teaching it as a standalone subject.
