Only 1 in 3 FinTechs Offer AI Chat Support, Creating Gap With Customer Demand

Financial technology companies are falling behind on AI for Customer Support, with just one-third of FinTech executives saying their firms currently deploy AI-led chat support, according to PYMNTS Intelligence research. The finding reveals a persistent mismatch between what customers want and what financial institutions deliver.

Credit unions lag even further behind banks on customer-facing AI tools. Many lack the resources to build or deploy conversational systems in-house, a constraint that doesn't exist for larger institutions like Boeing Employees Credit Union.

The Real Barriers Aren't Technical

Integration complexity, data governance, and regulatory compliance are the primary obstacles to deploying ChatGPT-style chat systems in banking. Connecting AI chat to core banking systems requires secure access to customer data, safeguards against AI hallucinations, and controls to prevent unauthorized transactions.

These implementation costs hit smaller institutions hardest. Organizations with dedicated engineering and legal teams can absorb the expense. Smaller credit unions and regional players cannot.

Other Sectors Have Already Moved

Retail and travel have normalized conversational AI. Amazon deployed its Rufus shopping assistant in 2024. Airlines and insurers run routine chatbots for customer inquiries.

Financial services has not followed the same path, even as customers who've switched institutions report elevated demand for AI chat support.

Where the Opportunity Lies

Vendors and integrators serving regulated finance face an opening. Third-party solutions that handle compliance, data security, and integration complexity could unlock adoption at smaller institutions that lack in-house capacity.

Watch for announcements of pre-approved vendor solutions designed for banking workflows, partnerships between credit unions and cloud or model providers, and auditing frameworks tailored to conversational AI in financial use cases.
