OpenAI is assembling a cross-functional leadership structure across India, bringing in senior executives from Meta, Netflix, Google, AWS, Spotify, Intel, WhatsApp and PayU. The hiring pattern signals a shift from early-stage market entry toward long-term operational scale in what the company views as a major growth market.

The company plans to expand its physical footprint with new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru alongside its existing New Delhi base.

Regional structure positions India centrally

Kiran Mani was appointed Managing Director for Asia Pacific to oversee expansion across India, Japan and Indonesia. Mani previously led Android and Google Play operations in the region and held roles at Microsoft and IBM.

His appointment reflects OpenAI's stated India strategy. In February 2026, CEO Sam Altman said the company is "working together to build the infrastructure, skills, and local partnerships needed to build AI with India, for India, and in India." The framing positions India as both a user market and a development partner.

Policy, marketing and communications leadership in place

Pragya Mishra leads strategy and global affairs, overseeing policy and institutional engagement. She previously held the public policy lead role for OpenAI in India and worked at Truecaller and WhatsApp India on communications and platform trust.

Sheeladitya Mohanty joined as Head of Marketing for India from Meta AI, where he managed APAC product marketing and regional growth initiatives. Akash Iyer, India Social Lead, came from Netflix after nearly seven years in entertainment marketing and platform strategy.

Vasundhara Mudgil leads communications for India, having previously managed Spotify India's market-entry communications. She earlier worked at Intel and Burson.

Enterprise sales and compute infrastructure get priority

Nitin Bawankule joined as Head of Enterprise Sales for India with experience across Google, AWS and Disney. At AWS, he worked on enterprise cloud and AI adoption across telecom, retail, logistics and media.

Sachin Katti, who came from Intel where he served as Chief Technology and AI Officer, leads compute-focused operations. Katti has held academic and research roles at Stanford, UC Berkeley and MIT, and co-founded deep-tech ventures Uhana and Kumu Networks.

Startup ecosystem and operations scaling underway

Arjun Gupta, AI Deployment Engineer, previously co-founded AuraML, which focused on synthetic data and robotics simulation. He also worked at Josh Talks and contributed to open-source systems including Apache Drill.

Sanya Arora leads go-to-market strategy for startups after working at PayU on startup partnerships and fintech marketing. Globally, Arvind KC oversees people operations as Chief People Officer, with prior roles at Roblox, Google, Palantir and Facebook.

Strategy signals long-term commitment

The breadth of hiring across enterprise adoption, communications, policy, infrastructure and ecosystem development indicates OpenAI views India as a major execution hub, not simply another market to enter.

India's developer base, startup ecosystem and growing enterprise technology demand position it as one of the most important AI adoption markets globally. OpenAI's current strategy suggests the company intends to participate in India's AI infrastructure, policy and developer ecosystems as competition intensifies across generative AI.
