OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Academic Researchers, a program that will provide scientists, mathematicians and engineers at selected academic institutions with free access to its frontier artificial intelligence models. The company will begin with 10,000 researchers this summer, with plans to expand the program to as many as 100,000 participants through 2027. The initiative equips researchers with tools to accelerate data analysis, hypothesis testing, literature review, manuscript drafting, and grant writing.
Participants will receive access to OpenAI's GPT-5.6 family of models across ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex, including GPT-5.6 Sol Pro at launch. The offering also includes expanded deep-research capabilities, higher usage limits and larger context windows. More than 75 life-science skills span genetics, genomics, sequencing, single-cell analysis, protein modeling and drug discovery. The program reflects the growing integration of AI for Science & Research into academic workflows.
Connectors to scientific literature, public genomic and clinical databases, computational notebooks, data platforms and reference-management tools are built into the program. OpenAI will provide training and hands-on support tailored to researchers with different levels of AI experience. Researcher data will not be used to train models by default, and program workspaces include business-grade privacy and security protections.
Who can apply and how
Eligible applicants must be affiliated with recognized degree-granting colleges or universities with high levels of research activity. They will need to verify their institutional affiliation and provide information about their active research and intended scientific use. Approved researchers may invite up to four collaborators from their institution, although each collaborator must verify their affiliation and will count toward the program's total number of accounts. Researchers can supplement the program's built-in training with independent learning resources, such as AI Research Courses, which cover academic research with AI.
Early impact on scientific research
OpenAI pointed to existing applications of its technology, including work at Boston Children's Hospital. The hospital developed a "co-pilot geneticist" that combines genetic and phenotypic information with medical literature and AI reasoning. According to OpenAI, the system has helped produce more than 40 diagnoses for rare conditions that had previously gone unresolved and has contributed to the identification of new gene targets and potential therapeutic pathways.
A growing push into research
This launch follows a series of moves by OpenAI into healthcare and research, including ChatGPT for Clinicians, a partnership with Novo Nordisk for drug discovery, and the $50 million Horizon 1000 initiative with the Gates Foundation to bring AI tools to clinics in Africa by 2028.
