OpenAI Reorganizes Again, Betting Company Future on AI Agents
OpenAI announced a reorganization Friday that consolidates its product divisions under president Greg Brockman, with the company committing to merge ChatGPT and Codex into a single AI agent platform. The shift reflects a strategic decision to focus resources on agents as a key revenue driver ahead of a potential IPO later this year.
In a memo, Brockman said OpenAI plans to "invest in a single agentic platform" and merge the two products to create "one unified agentic experience for all." The company is abandoning what it calls "side quests" to concentrate on high-margin areas like coding and enterprise software.
What's Changing
Brockman now officially leads product strategy and the company's scaling division - roles he assumed last month when AGI boss Fidji Simo took medical leave. Four product pillars report to him:
- Core product and platform: Led by Thibault Sottiaux, OpenAI's engineering lead for Codex
- Enterprise industries: Led by ChatGPT head Nick Turley
- Consumer products: Led by Ashley Alexander, formerly VP of healthcare products, covering health, commerce, and personal finance
- Infrastructure and growth: Led by Vijaye Raji, the company's CTO of applications
This is the second major reshuffle in as many months. Last month, OpenAI placed CFO Sarah Friar, CSO Jason Kwon, and CRO Denise Dresser in charge of business operations.
The Business Rationale
OpenAI's shift toward agents reflects investor pressure to demonstrate profitability before going public. Agents - AI systems that can perform tasks autonomously - represent a different monetization model than ChatGPT's subscription service.
By consolidating ChatGPT and Codex, OpenAI aims to bring agent capabilities to ChatGPT's scale. The company said the goal is to "give individuals and organizations significantly more value and utility from our products."
The repeated reorganizations signal internal debate over how to structure the company for growth. Whether this structure holds depends on whether the unified platform strategy delivers the revenue growth executives expect.
