Peet's Coffee deploys SoundHound voice AI agent to assist employees across its U.S. stores

Peet's Coffee has deployed SoundHound AI's voice assistant across its U.S. retail locations, giving in-store employees a hands-free tool to access recipes, nutrition data, and operational procedures in real time. The technology, internally branded "BaristAI," went live across Peet's core footprint this month and will expand to all company coffee bars nationwide, addressing a persistent friction point in fast-paced food service environments where new hires and seasonal menu changes create constant information demands.

How the voice assistant works on the floor

Employees access the system through a headset microphone or digital tablet. They ask questions in natural speech and receive immediate answers without paging through manuals or interrupting colleagues. The agent handles four categories of inquiries: beverage recipes with step-by-step preparation coaching and visual recipe cards, nutrition and allergen information such as dairy safety for cold brew, operational procedures like end-of-day closing checklists and supply requests, and equipment troubleshooting for issues like a blinking coffee urn light or a jammed grinder.

SoundHound built the system to function in noisy retail settings. For new hires, the tool reduces the time spent memorizing drink builds and allows them to learn on the job. For experienced staff, it serves as a quick reference during peak hours or when unusual equipment problems arise. The hands-free design matters in a coffee bar where employees need both hands to steam milk, pull shots, and handle cups.

Why Peet's invested in voice AI now

Gordon Bitter, Senior Vice President of Retail at Peet's Coffee, framed the decision around employee confidence. "At Peet's, we're dedicated to delivering a top-tier customer experience, and that starts with empowering our employees with the knowledge and confidence they need to do a great job," Bitter said. "With SoundHound's Employee Assist agent, we're giving our first-class teams access to all the information they need to deliver the best food and customer support - it's like having a digital expert in every barista's ears."

James Hom, Chief Product Officer and Co-Founder of SoundHound AI, pointed to the link between employee support and the customer experience. "When you empower a team with instant, hands-free knowledge, it directly translates into a better experience for every customer who walks through the door," Hom said.

The partnership reflects a broader shift in how restaurant chains approach frontline support. Rather than layering AI onto customer-facing ordering systems, this deployment targets internal workflows. For AI for customer support professionals, the model is instructive: the same voice technology that handles customer calls can also serve as an internal knowledge base for the employees who interact with customers directly.

Why this matters for customer support professionals

This deployment illustrates a trend that support leaders should track: AI is moving behind the counter. When employees get instant answers to product and process questions, the quality and speed of customer interactions improve without adding headcount. For support teams managing distributed frontline staff, voice AI agents can standardize knowledge delivery across locations, reduce the burden on senior employees who field constant questions, and shorten onboarding time for new hires. The technology doesn't replace the human interaction - it removes the friction that slows it down.

Supervisors overseeing teams in retail, hospitality, or food service can apply the same principle. The AI for Call Center Supervisors learning path covers how voice AI tools can support agents in real time, a pattern that mirrors what baristas now experience at Peet's. The core idea is the same: give people the right information at the moment they need it, and they perform better.
