Queensland Government Expands Use of Generative AI with QChat

More than 14,000 Queensland public service employees now use the state government's generative AI tool, QChat. Nearly a year after its full statewide rollout, the AI assistant continues to support daily tasks across 18 government agencies.

QChat, built on Microsoft Azure OpenAI’s GPT-4o model, was initially introduced in late 2023 through a private preview for select departments. Since then, it has been integrated into everyday workflows to help staff draft documents, brainstorm ideas, and save time on routine tasks.

Upgraded AI Model Enhances Productivity

In mid-April 2025, the underlying AI model was upgraded to GPT-4o, improving QChat’s performance. According to a spokesperson from the Department of Customer Services, Open Data and Small and Family Business (CDSB), users appreciate the tool’s ease of use and the assurance that it operates within a secure and private environment.

The government is currently running an evaluation program to assess QChat’s effectiveness and gather feedback from users. Early reports confirm that the AI assistant helps employees work more efficiently without compromising data security.

Practical Benefits for Government Staff

  • Speeds up document drafting and editing
