Reddit Plans Heavy Graduate Hiring as AI Reshapes Entry-Level Jobs
Reddit's CEO Steve Huffman said the company will prioritize hiring new graduates, arguing that recent entrants to the workforce have a productivity advantage over experienced hires because they learned to code alongside generative AI tools.
Speaking on the Sourcery with Molly O'Shea podcast, Huffman described graduates as "AI native" workers who use ChatGPT and similar tools as a standard part of their development process. Older engineers, he said, carry the baggage of pre-AI workflows that slow them down.
"The kids coming out of college right now learned how to programme with AI," Huffman said. "They are really good at it. It is the old people like me. I do not want to not write code anymore. The younger people do not have that baggage, they just write with AI."

Huffman's hiring strategy reflects a broader corporate bet that AI will enhance productivity rather than eliminate jobs. He framed AI as a force multiplier that allows engineers to build products faster, not as a replacement for junior staff.

Industry Warnings Paint a Different Picture
Not all technology leaders share Huffman's optimism about entry-level employment. Dario Amodei, CEO of AI company Anthropic, has suggested that AI could eliminate a significant share of entry-level white-collar jobs by 2030.
Geoffrey Hinton, an AI pioneer, warned that advanced systems could eventually replace large portions of office-based work, with a single human using AI tools potentially replacing the output of multiple workers.
These warnings have intensified concerns among students and early-career professionals in competitive fields like software engineering, where automation increasingly handles routine coding tasks.
The Strategic Divide
Huffman's position places Reddit among companies that see AI as an opportunity to increase output rather than reduce headcount. He said that if engineers become significantly more productive through AI tools, Reddit would build more products rather than shrink teams.
This approach contrasts sharply with industry warnings about job displacement. The debate reflects genuine uncertainty about how AI will reshape entry-level white-collar work as companies accelerate adoption across core operations.
