Roche and Genentech opened a 1 million-square-foot Innovation Center in Allston on Thursday, establishing a new hub for cardiovascular, renal and metabolism (CVRM) research. The center, backed by a 10-year lease, will employ up to 500 people across research, clinical development, and data science, with artificial intelligence specialists embedded alongside discovery teams.

The facility is part of a joint $50 billion investment by the Switzerland-based Roche and its subsidiary Genentech in U.S. manufacturing and R&D. Other locations in the plan include sites in North Carolina and Oregon. The Allston center sits within the mixed-use Harvard Enterprise Research Center, which is still under development.

"This investment in Boston is an important part of our commitment to expand our U.S. manufacturing and R&D footprint," said Roche Group CEO Thomas Schinecker. "By investing in scientific talent, new capabilities and infrastructure, we are strengthening our ability to discover and develop the next generation of medicines for patients."

AI and data science in drug development

The companies said the center will house "AI specialists" working directly with discovery and clinical researchers. Roche pointed to existing related work that includes using AI in cancer research to identify targeted treatment approaches and analyze the effectiveness of new cancer drugs in clinical trials. The company has also worked on combating antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said the center "will create hundreds of jobs, drive new investment and further strengthen Boston's life sciences ecosystem." The facility's end-to-end R&D scope - spanning early discovery through clinical development - means it will house a wider range of scientific roles than a single-function research outpost.
