Sixfold launches AI Underwriter platform for insurers
Sixfold launched its AI Underwriter after a $30M Series B. Insurers using it report processing time cuts of 50-97% and hit ratio gains over 15%.

Sixfold has released its AI Underwriter, a generative AI platform that assists underwriters with risk assessment, submission analysis, and decision support throughout the submission process. The launch follows a $30 million Series B funding round and arrives as insurers search for ways to accelerate underwriting without sacrificing accuracy.
How the AI Underwriter works
When a submission lands, the platform gathers and standardizes relevant information, flags missing data, and evaluates how well the risk aligns with the carrier's appetite and portfolio strategy. It then produces a recommendation, explains its reasoning, and suggests the next action. The system also accounts for broker relationships, current book composition, and business objectives, not just the individual risk.
Alex Schmelkin, founder and CEO of Sixfold, said: "What does a great underwriter actually need the moment they receive a submission? They don't need a digitized version of the application, broker documents moved from their inbox to another system, or a dashboard with data that was current last week. Instead, our users told us that what they need is to understand the risk in the full context of their current book, the broker, and the guidelines, and to be presented with a clear next step. Right there, at the moment a decision is being made. That is what the AI Underwriter does."
The Underwriting Brain and carrier-specific learning
Sixfold built the platform on what it calls an Underwriting Brain, a core intelligence layer that encodes underwriting standards, professional frameworks, and reasoning methodologies across multiple industries and lines of business. Each insurer's implementation operates independently. The system learns from that carrier's appetite, guidelines, and past decisions, and the feedback stays locked inside that carrier's environment. Information from one insurer is never used to train another.
Adoption and early results
Sixfold says its technology has processed more than 1.5 million submissions across over 50 lines of business since the company was founded in 2023. Its customer base represents roughly $270 billion in gross written premium and includes Skyward Specialty, Zurich, Generali GC&C, Guardian, AXIS, and New York Life.
Insurers using the platform report:
- Processing time reductions between 50% and 97%
- Hit ratio increases of at least 15%
- Gross written premium per underwriter growth of up to 30%
Melissa Butt, Vice President E&S Brokerage, Property at Skyward Specialty, said: "The AI Underwriter does not just summarize what you are looking at, it gives you a point of view and a clear path forward. For more junior underwriters it's a powerful companion that gives them the perspectives of a more experienced underwriter and accelerates their development. Even veteran underwriters who are a little more skeptical of new technology, see the tool as an added layer of intelligence."
While Sixfold's platform integrates with existing underwriting systems, insurance professionals are increasingly pursuing AI for Insurance Courses & Certifications to build the skills needed to work alongside these tools.
Why this matters for insurance professionals
Jane Tran, co-founder and COO of Sixfold, said a survey of more than 500 underwriters and executives showed that they want more time for "the complex risks, the unusual ones, the cases that need real expertise and creativity." The AI Underwriter aims to shift routine analysis away from human underwriters so they can focus on exactly that kind of work.
For insurance teams, the practical lesson is straightforward: tools like this can strip hours out of submission processing and raise hit ratios, but the gains depend on keeping human judgment at the centre. The underwriters who get the most from AI will be those who use it to sharpen their edge on hard-to-place business, not to replace their own expertise.
