Sony Frames AI as Tool to Amplify Creators, Not Replace Them

Sony Group and PlayStation outlined an AI strategy Friday centered on human creativity, with executives describing concrete applications already generating measurable returns across entertainment, music and gaming divisions.

Sony Group president and CEO Totoki Hiroki said the company views AI as "an amplifier of human imagination and catalyst for new possibilities," not a substitute for artists. "Human creativity must remain at the center," he said at Sony's corporate strategy presentation.

Production and Content Protection

Sony Pictures has invested more than $50 million in AI capabilities for production planning, content protection, enterprise productivity, data analytics and 3D conversion. The company is pursuing industry-wide standards to label AI-generated content and working with licensing partners to protect intellectual property rights.

A collaborative pilot with Bandai Namco Holdings identified substantial speed and productivity gains in video production, though current models show limitations around consistency and controllability. Sony developed fine-tuned models using proprietary data to address these gaps.

Gaming Applications Deliver Revenue

PlayStation is automating repetitive workflows across first-party studios, improving software engineering, quality assurance, 3D modeling and animation. A tool called Mockingbird generates facial animations from performance capture data in a fraction of previous time requirements. Teams at Naughty Dog and San Diego Studio have deployed it on released titles.

An AI-driven hair animation tool converts video footage into strand-level 3D models, reducing what had been a labor-intensive process. PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution on the PS5 Pro uses machine learning to deliver 4K visuals at high frame rates.

AI-powered payment routing has generated more than $700 million in incremental revenue over recent years by directing transactions more efficiently across payment networks. PlayStation president Nishino Hideaki said the company is building on that foundation with machine-learning projects for personalization-recommending not just games, but specific gameplay moments, subscriptions and merchandise.

Supply Chain and Tariff Pressures

Sony faces external headwinds from a current memory shortage driven by surging AI infrastructure demand. The shortage is affecting gaming, smartphones, laptops and memory cards. PlayStation's hardware business expects to contain cost impacts through supplier negotiations.

Geopolitical uncertainty adds complexity. Totoki cited unrest in the Middle East and shifting tariff pressures as sources of uncertainty across market partnerships and supply chains. "Adaptability will be crucially important," he said. "We cannot rely on assumptions that have supported us in the past."
