Study finds legal departments will pay a premium for contract attorneys with AI fluency

A survey of 163 legal hiring managers and attorneys finds that 86% of legal departments are willing to pay a premium-typically 11% to 20% above standard rates-for contract attorneys who combine specialized legal knowledge with AI fluency. The data signals a direct link between artificial intelligence skills and higher compensation in the flexible legal workforce.

Paragon Legal, which conducted the survey in April, said "for contract attorneys who can combine deep practice area knowledge with the ability to use new tools and manage complex work, this is a moment of real opportunity." The study also shows 66% of legal departments plan to increase their use of contract attorneys over the next 12 months.

Demand for AI-fluent contract attorneys

According to the study, 95% of legal departments now require or prefer AI fluency when making hiring decisions. As these expectations become standard, attorneys are increasingly looking to AI for Legal Professionals Training to build the skills that employers demand.

Where premiums are highest

Contract attorneys are most likely to command a rate premium in employment and labor law, marketing and advertising, technology transactions, and commercial work. These practice areas see the strongest overlap between deep specialization and the need for AI-driven efficiency in document review, contract analysis, and workflow management.

Impact on attorney pay and efficiency

The study found that 72% of attorneys have not had to accept lower pay because of AI. In addition, 60% say the technology has made their work more efficient. The results challenge earlier concerns that automation would suppress legal billing rates and instead point toward a market that rewards technical adaptability.

Why this matters for legal professionals

For contract attorneys, the message is clear. Developing AI competency alongside a focused legal expertise opens a direct path to higher rates. With legal departments planning to expand their contingent workforce, fluency in AI tools is no longer optional-it is a measurable advantage that translates into real pay increases.
