Thomson Reuters launches CoCounsel Legal UK, an AI platform combining practical law and westlaw content

Thomson Reuters launched CoCounsel Legal UK, a platform that combines advanced AI capabilities with Practical Law and Westlaw UK content to accelerate legal research, drafting, and document analysis while keeping data private and secure. The launch comes as UK law firms and in-house teams move beyond pilots and embed AI into governed, day-to-day workflows.

Early AI tools helped lawyers find information faster. Generative AI then made it possible to review and summarise document sets, produce timelines, and create first-draft advice notes. Now the market is shifting toward agentic AI, which plans and executes multi-step tasks, a move closely tied to AI agents and automation in legal work. More than two-thirds of respondents (68%) support AI for non-legal work, and 55% back AI for legal tasks, according to Thomson Reuters' Future of Professionals 2025 report.

Deep Research for complex legal questions

CoCounsel Legal UK includes Deep Research, an agentic question-answering capability that mirrors how experienced lawyers plan a research route, refine it as they go, and draw on trusted content to deliver structured answers.

  • Advisory and compliance work: pull together relevant UK legislation and amendments, check it against regulator rules and guidance, and flag differences across England & Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland - or between UK and EU regimes.
  • Litigation preparation: surface case law, compare key authorities, and summarise implications for argument and strategy.

The result is research that moves teams from finding to deciding with greater confidence and speed.

Tabular analysis for high-volume document review

Tabular analysis in CoCounsel Legal UK handles the error-prone task of reviewing up to 10,000 documents with up to 100 questions. It organises results in a filterable table that users can adjust while a review is in progress, with a three-pane viewer and clickable footnotes to verify answers directly in the source document.

  • Add or remove documents and questions during processing
  • Navigate results in a three-pane viewer
  • Verify answers with footnotes linked to the document
  • Run multiple tables simultaneously

CoCounsel Legal UK also provides a library of pre-built prompts and skills, designed and tested by Thomson Reuters experts, removing the guesswork that often slows adoption. Tried-and-tested skills let users summarise long, complex documents, ask in-depth questions with citations, and assess similarities, differences, and favourability between documents.

Why this matters for legal professionals

By taking over document triage, first-draft work, and repetitive analysis, CoCounsel Legal UK frees lawyers to focus on strategic advice, negotiation, and client relationships. Teams can respond faster and manage workload pressure without sacrificing accuracy or professional judgement, making AI a practical, everyday tool for improving both quality and speed.
