The University of Hawaiʻi launched a free, self-paced online AI course for the public on September 7, 2026. The course requires no login or university affiliation, removing common barriers for educators, government workers, small business owners, and community members who need to build AI literacy as the technology reshapes classrooms and workplaces.
Eighty percent of hiring managers now consider AI skills a priority when evaluating candidates, according to CNBC. The National Association of Colleges and Employers reports that 60% of employers already assign interns projects involving AI tools. UH President Wendy Hensel framed the initiative as a direct response to that pressure.
"AI is transforming the way we work, learn and live, and Hawaiʻi cannot afford to sit on the sidelines," Hensel said. "UH has both an opportunity and a responsibility to help our state lead through this change. That means making AI education accessible to everyone and giving people the practical skills to use these tools effectively, responsibly and in ways that reflect Hawaiʻi's values."
Course structure and content
Hosted on the UH OneAI Hub, the course uses instructional videos, Hawaiʻi-based examples, and hands-on activities. A UH Task Force on Hawaiian Values and Culture examined protocols for how ʻike and ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi resources should be used in AI systems, and what kinds of information should not be contributed to them. That lens informs the entire curriculum.
The 12 chapters are grouped into four clusters. Chapters 1 through 3 cover fundamentals: how AI and machine learning work, plus bias, fairness, and transparency. Chapters 4 through 6 address responsible AI, environmental impact, and opportunities in conservation and climate resilience. Chapters 7 through 9 examine how AI is changing teaching, learning, academic integrity, and organizational operations. The final section, chapters 10 through 12, focuses on practical workplace skills including advanced prompting and applications in tourism and agriculture.
Gloria Niles, UH chief academic technology innovation officer, said the course is designed to let communities shape how the technology gets used. "By focusing our exploration on transparency and responsible deployment within a Hawaiʻi context, we can thoughtfully integrate these technologies while honoring our core values."
