The University of Tampa will require all sophomores to complete a one-credit AI literacy course beginning this fall, replacing a digital literacy class focused on Python. The move responds to employer demand for graduates who can use AI tools productively, not just code.
The university developed the course with Codio, a higher education learning platform also used by the University of Florida, Cornell University, and UC Berkeley. Students will complete the self-paced course outside scheduled class time.
Jessica O'Brien, the university's online learning and digital literacy coordinator, said the curriculum shift reflects how quickly AI technology is changing. Students have raised frequent questions about appropriate AI use, she said, and the university has no campus-wide policy, leaving decisions to individual faculty members.
Building judgment, not just prompt skills
The course is designed to open conversations between students and instructors, particularly for students worried about being accused of misusing AI. O'Brien said the goal is to help students approach faculty with specific questions about what AI use looks like for a given assignment.
"It's really just a way for students to be able to approach their faculty members and ask, 'Hey, I noticed in the syllabus you said we can use AI at certain times. What does that look like for this assignment?'" she said.
One section of the course covers researching and verifying AI-generated responses. Another helps students recognize where AI already operates in their daily lives, such as how Instagram and TikTok recommendation feeds are shaped by their likes and comments.
Employer pressure drives the shift
Doug Hughes, Codio's CEO, said faculty across the country asked the company to move ethics content to the beginning of the course. Employers increasingly expect recent graduates to have at least basic AI skills, and Hughes said many want to see applicants who can use AI to increase productivity.
Hughes pointed to entry-level marketing roles as an example: new hires should know how to use AI to draft copy and analyze competitor performance. But colleges haven't figured out how to teach AI skills at scale, which leaves graduates without the abilities employers want.
He cautioned that a single required course won't close the gap. That will require integrating AI into "every single course of study in higher education."
