US and China plan official AI discussions at Trump-Xi summit
Washington and Beijing are considering adding artificial intelligence to the agenda for a summit next week between President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, according to the Wall Street Journal. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent would lead the American side of the proposed talks, while China has not yet named its representative.
Trump said earlier this week he plans to remind Xi that the United States leads in AI as the two countries manage tensions over trade and technology. The discussions would mark the first official channel between the governments specifically focused on the technology.
Reuters could not immediately verify the report.
The timing reflects growing concern among policymakers about AI competition and coordination between the world's two largest economies. Government officials increasingly recognize that AI for Government requires direct engagement at senior levels.
Understanding the technical foundations of these discussions matters for policy work. Generative AI and LLM capabilities have become central to how both countries view their strategic positions.
