The U.S. Department of Agriculture will open a national challenge later this year asking universities and industry partners to build artificial intelligence tools that turn its massive germplasm collections into faster crop discoveries. The effort seeks to let researchers spot valuable plant traits-such as disease tolerance or drought resistance-weeks or months sooner than manual analysis allows.
Challenge built on Genesis Mission and AgARDA
USDA announced the Agricultural National Science and Technology Challenge through the Agriculture Advanced Research and Development Authority (AgARDA) and the Genesis Mission, a White House-led initiative launched in November 2025. The mission pools federal scientists, private companies, universities and major research facilities to solve complex problems using artificial intelligence. The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy coordinates the work.
"USDA is taking concrete steps to give scientists the modern tools they need to innovate agricultural solutions from the vast plant data that they collect," said REE Under Secretary and USDA Chief Scientist Scott Hutchins in the release. "When our partners help us to solve agricultural challenges by using AI tools, we'll unlock faster discoveries with germplasm data and grow better crops that strengthen our food system for many future generations."
Multimodal data fusion speeds trait discovery
The challenge will seek AI tools that combine images, field observations, laboratory results and other data types. Scientists could then surface links between genetic material and crop performance without manually sorting through separate databases. Faster trait identification feeds directly into breeding programs aimed at dealing with weather extremes and evolving pest and disease pressures.
Shared DOE platform provides infrastructure
Teams selected for the challenge will get access to the American Science and Security Platform, shared infrastructure developed by the Department of Energy. The platform connects scientific datasets, research equipment and AI tools so that participants can run analyses across data held at different institutions. USDA expects the combined resources will help researchers turn large plant data holdings into actionable breeding insights.
