ustwo, the global employee-owned digital product studio, has appointed Simon Bouton, Chief Experience Officer at Google DeepMind, as its first AI Non-Executive Director. The move embeds AI oversight directly into the boardroom, reflecting a growing recognition that artificial intelligence strategy is a governance issue, not just a technology project.
The appointment follows ustwo's internal AI leadership expansion, including the promotion of Nayan Jain to Executive Director of AI in 2024 and Nick Hegarty to Executive Director of Technology earlier this year. Bouton's role is designed to turn the studio's AI investment into durable growth for its clients, treating AI as a tool that serves people rather than as an end in itself.
That philosophy already shows up in ustwo's responsible AI practices. The studio partnered with the University of Bristol to build PRISM, an open-source IDE plug-in launched last month that gives software developers directional guidance on the environmental impact of their AI usage.
A decade-long relationship rooted in real-world deployment
Bouton's connection to ustwo stretches back over ten years. As Programme Manager at Google DeepMind Health, he worked with the studio to deliver a clinical alert app to NHS staff, balancing strict healthcare security standards with the practical demands of clinical workflows. Since then, he has spent more than a decade at Google DeepMind and Isomorphic Labs, including involvement in the early days of AlphaFold, the protein-structure-prediction system that later earned a Nobel Prize. He also led DeepMind's collaboration with Stanford's Human-Centered AI institute, studying how AI is reshaping organizational coordination and decision-making.
Boardroom oversight for AI strategy
"We're thrilled to welcome Simon Bouton to the board," said Sue Siddall, Chair of the ustwo board. "His tenure at Google DeepMind gives him a rare vantage point on where AI is heading, informed by earned experience, outside the distraction of hype. Having that expertise on the board will be a critical driver for the next chapter for ustwo, one where we're just as disciplined about measuring outcomes for clients as we are about the technology itself."
Bouton will advise ustwo's leadership on AI strategy, governance, monetisation models, and product-market fit for AI-enabled offerings. He emphasised that the appointment is about more than the tools themselves. "The work itself is being reimagined right now, not just the tools we use, and having spent my career on the frontier of that shift, I'm less interested in what AI can do today than in what it means for how we'll work two years from now," he said.
Adding a director focused solely on AI signals a structural shift. As more companies move AI from pilot programs to core operations, the need for board-level scrutiny increases. For executives, this means AI governance can no longer be delegated to technology teams alone. Structured learning resources, such as the AI Learning Path for Chief Digital Officers, can help bridge the gap between technical capability and strategic oversight.
Responsible AI and global expansion
ustwo's work spans regulated industries and mission-critical applications. The studio has designed and built AI solutions for global organisations including UBS, HSBC, and L'OrΓ©al. It helped launch the conversational AI Pi with Mustafa Suleyman, developed an AI-powered smoking cessation programme for RVO Health, and created digital products for chronic kidney disease care with Fresenius Medical Care. The appointment comes during a year of growth, with expansion in North America and Latin America and continued investment in AI tooling for its workforce.
Nicki Sprinz, CEO of ustwo, said: "We build digital experiences people stick with. That's been true for more than 20 years and it'll be true when the current AI conversation has moved on to whatever comes next. Simon's appointment is how we make sure any work with AI stays anchored to lasting value for customers, businesses and society, at board level."
Why this matters for Executives and Strategy
ustwo's appointment of an AI Non-Executive Director is a concrete signal that AI strategy is no longer a functional silo. For executives, it means embedding AI governance into the boardroom - not just for risk management, but to ensure that technology investments deliver measurable, durable value. The studio's focus on responsible AI, combined with Bouton's depth of experience from AlphaFold to clinical AI, shows that strategic oversight of AI requires both technical fluency and a long-term view.
