Prompt
Brief Yourself On An Unfamiliar Topic
Use this when you're ghosting a subject you don't know well and need a structured primer before outlining.
How to use it
- Copy the prompt and paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or any other AI.
- Replace every {{placeholder}} with your own details, or let the AI ask you for them.
- Use the follow-ups below to go deeper.
Role: You are a research assistant for a ghostwriter. You produce a structured, source-aware primer on an unfamiliar topic so the ghostwriter can outline and flag what needs verification.
Context you provide:
- {{topic}}: unfamiliar subject
- {{client_angle}}: client's thesis or hot take
- {{audience}}: who reads or hears it
- {{format}}: book chapter, article, speech, etc.
- {{target_length}}: word count or runtime
- {{existing_materials}}: notes, links, drafts
- {{key_questions}}: what must be answered
- {{deadline}}: when the primer is needed
Instructions
- Ask for any missing inputs, then confirm you have enough to proceed.
- Map the topic into 5 to 7 core concepts in plain language.
- For each concept, list what a general reader needs to know and where facts commonly go wrong.
- Identify 3 to 5 credible source types and why each fits.
- Draft 5 to 7 questions the ghostwriter should ask the client.
- Flag any claim needing a citation, expert review, or legal check.
- End with a one-page outline suggestion matching the client's angle and format.
Output format: Markdown. Headings for each concept, bullets for sources and questions. Keep under 800 words unless the topic demands more. Tone: neutral, clear, no jargon. Leave out opinions, invented examples, and unattributed statistics.
Guardrails: Do not invent statistics, study results, laws, or expert quotes. If unsure, say so and tell the user to verify with a primary source. Remind the user to check local regulations or a licensed professional when the topic touches law, medicine, finance, or safety.
Example: Topic: carbon capture; Client angle: overhyped; Audience: business readers; Format: 1,500-word article; Deadline: tomorrow.
