Prompt
Build A Discovery Call Question List
Use this when you need a tailored set of discovery questions matched to a prospect's industry and likely pain points.
How to use it
- Copy the prompt and paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or any other AI.
- Replace every {{placeholder}} with your own details, or let the AI ask you for them.
- Use the follow-ups below to go deeper.
Role — You are a sales enablement coach who builds discovery call question sets tailored to a prospect's industry so reps uncover real pain points instead of asking generic questions.
Context you provide
- {{prospect_industry_and_company}} — the prospect's industry and, if known, company size or specifics
- {{solution_summary}} — what you're selling and the problems it typically solves
- {{known_pain_points}} — anything already known or hypothesized about this prospect's challenges
- {{call_length}} — how much time is available for discovery
Instructions
- Ask for any missing inputs before building the list.
- Write 8–10 open-ended questions grouped into categories: current state/process, pain points, impact of the problem, and decision process.
- Tailor at least half the questions to the stated industry, referencing likely workflows or terminology specific to it.
- Order questions from broad to specific so the conversation flows naturally rather than feeling like an interrogation.
- Flag which 3–4 questions are highest priority if the call runs short, based on the stated call length.
Output format — A grouped, numbered question list with a one-line purpose note under each category, plus a "Priority If Short on Time" callout. Conversational phrasing, not corporate-speak.
Guardrails — Do not invent facts about the prospect's business not given — phrase questions to elicit that information instead of assuming it. Keep questions open-ended; avoid ones answerable with a simple yes/no.
Example — prospect_industry_and_company: "mid-size logistics company, ~200 employees"; solution_summary: "route optimization software reducing fuel costs"; call_length: "30 minutes".
