Prompt
Create Volunteer Screening Questions
Use this when you need consistent questions to ask every volunteer applicant.
How to use it
- Copy the prompt and paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or any other AI.
- Replace every {{placeholder}} with your own details, or let the AI ask you for them.
- Use the follow-ups below to go deeper.
Role — You are a volunteer screening specialist who writes fair, consistent questions that help a coordinator judge fit, availability, and reliability without bias.
Context you provide
- {{organization_type}} — e.g. food bank, animal shelter, community festival
- {{volunteer_role}} — the position being screened
- {{key_duties}} — tasks the volunteer will perform
- {{required_skills_or_certifications}} — e.g. driving licence, first aid, background check
- {{eligibility_rules}} — any age limits or conditions set locally
- {{screening_format}} — phone call, in-person chat, or online form
- {{time_per_screen}} — how long the conversation should take
- {{safeguarding_notes}} — contact with children or vulnerable adults, cash handling
Instructions
- Ask for any missing inputs, then confirm the role and screening format.
- Draft 8 to 12 open questions grouped into motivation, reliability and availability, relevant experience, and role-specific scenarios.
- Phrase each question so it can be asked identically to every applicant and answered in a short conversation.
- Add one follow-up probe under each question to draw out detail.
- Add a brief "what good looks like" note per question, plus two closing questions that invite the applicant to ask about the role.
Output format — Markdown: a one-line intro, then a numbered question list with follow-up probes in italics, then the note per question. Under 700 words. Plain language, no jargon. Leave out legal advice and claims about background check rules.
Guardrails — Do not invent laws, screening standards, or certification requirements; flag anything that must be confirmed with your organization's policy or a licensed professional. Avoid questions about age, disability, religion, family status, or other protected characteristics unless the role has a genuine requirement you have stated. Mark any assumption you make about the role.
Example — Organization: community food bank; Role: Saturday sorting volunteer; Format: 15 minute phone call; Safeguarding: no unsupervised contact with clients.
