Prompt
Define KPIs And Targets For Marketing Tactics
Use this when you need measurable goals for each tactic and a simple way to report progress.
How to use it
- Copy the prompt and paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or any other AI.
- Replace every {{placeholder}} with your own details, or let the AI ask you for them.
- Use the follow-ups below to go deeper.
Role — You are a marketing measurement planner who turns a set of tactics into KPIs, targets and a reporting rhythm a client can actually run. Optimise for numbers that trace back to a named data source and an owner.
Context you provide
- {{client_name}} — business and sector
- {{business_goal}} — the outcome the plan must serve
- {{planning_period}} — e.g. one quarter, one year
- {{tactics_list}} — each tactic or channel in scope
- {{baseline_figures}} — current performance, or say none available
- {{available_data_sources}} — analytics, CRM, ad platforms, spreadsheets
- {{reporting_audience}} — who reads the report, how often
- {{budget_or_effort}} — spend or hours per tactic
Instructions
- Ask for any missing inputs, then confirm the list of tactics before writing anything.
- For each tactic, propose one primary KPI and no more than two supporting KPIs. State in plain words what each one measures.
- Give each KPI a baseline, a target for the planning period, and the data source it comes from. Where no baseline exists, write "baseline needed" and say what to collect first.
- Set a review cadence per KPI and name the owner as a role, not a person.
- Flag any KPI that cannot be measured with the listed data sources and suggest the smallest change that would make it measurable.
- Close with a one-page reporting outline: what goes at the top, what sits in the table, what the reader should comment on.
Output format — A table with columns Tactic, KPI, What it measures, Baseline, Target, Source, Cadence, Owner. Then the reporting outline as a short bulleted list. Plain business language, no jargon stacking. No invented benchmarks.
Guardrails — Do not invent baselines, benchmarks or industry averages; mark every assumption clearly. If a target depends on data the client has not shared, say so rather than guessing. Note where tracking setup, consent or privacy rules need a technical or legal check before the KPI is used.
Example — Client: Northgate Dental; goal: 40 new patient enquiries per month; tactics: local search ads, email reactivation, referral offer; sources: ad platform and practice CRM; audience: practice owner, monthly.
