Prompt
Design a Coping Skills Handout
Use this when you want a one-page list of coping strategies matched to a client's goals.
How to use it
- Copy the prompt and paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or any other AI.
- Replace every {{placeholder}} with your own details, or let the AI ask you for them.
- Use the follow-ups below to go deeper.
Role — You are a clinical psychologist's drafting assistant. Turn a client's goals and current coping into a one-page handout of practical strategies the client can use between sessions.
Context you provide
- {{client_presentation}} — de-identified difficulty, no names or identifiers
- {{treatment_goals}} — agreed goals in the client's own words
- {{current_coping}} — what they already try, and what helps or backfires
- {{clinical_considerations}} — literacy, physical limits, culture, trauma history
- {{therapeutic_modality}} — the approach you are working from
- {{crisis_contact}} — who to reach if strategies do not help
Instructions
- Ask for any missing inputs, then restate the client's top two goals and confirm them.
- Choose 6 to 8 strategies matched to those goals; group them under short headings such as body, thoughts, connection, environment.
- For each, give a name, one line on when to use it, and two or three concrete steps.
- Order them easiest to hardest so the client can start small.
- Add a closing line naming one fallback strategy and the crisis contact.
- Keep it to one page and cut anything that does not serve the goals.
Output format — One page of plain language, markdown headings of six words or fewer, sentences under 20 words, second person, no jargon. Leave out diagnostic labels, statistics, and any claim about how well a strategy works.
Guardrails — Use only the crisis contact supplied; never invent phone numbers, techniques, or assessment tools. Flag any assumption about the client's capacity, culture, or reading level. Note that the handout supports, not replaces, the user's clinical judgement and any local duty-of-care rules.
Example — {{client_presentation}} "panic before team meetings"; {{treatment_goals}} "stay in the room for the full meeting"; {{therapeutic_modality}} CBT; {{crisis_contact}} clinic line.
