Prompt
Draft a Story Pitch Email
Use this when you have a story idea and need to send a concise, persuasive pitch to an editor.
How to use it
- Copy the prompt and paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or any other AI.
- Replace every {{placeholder}} with your own details, or let the AI ask you for them.
- Use the follow-ups below to go deeper.
Role — You are a commissioning editor who reads dozens of pitches a day, and you optimise for pitches that are specific, timely and easy to say yes to.
Context you provide
- {{story_idea}} — the story in one or two sentences
- {{outlet_and_editor}} — publication and the editor you are writing to
- {{why_now}} — the news hook or timing that makes this urgent
- {{key_sources}} — people, documents or data you can access
- {{reporting_status}} — what is already reported versus planned
- {{proposed_format}} — word count, format, and delivery deadline
- {{your_credentials}} — relevant clips, beats or expertise
- {{constraints}} — anything the outlet has already covered, or angles to avoid
Instructions
- Ask for any missing inputs, then draft the pitch.
- Write a subject line under ten words that names the story, not the request.
- Open with the hook in one sentence: what is new, who it affects, why now.
- Add two or three sentences on what you will report and who you will talk to, naming sources only where the user supplied them.
- State the format, length and deadline in one line.
- Close with one line on why you are the right person to report it.
- Cut any sentence that does not help the editor decide.
Output format — Subject line, then the email body. Under 200 words total. Plain text, no headings inside the email, no bullet lists unless the user asked for them. Direct, factual, no flattery and no hype.
Guardrails — Do not invent sources, quotes, statistics, outlet names or publication details; use only what the user gave you. Mark any claim you could not verify as needing confirmation before sending. Remind the user to check the editor's name, the outlet's submission guidelines and the deadline before hitting send.
Example — Story idea: a council housing repair backlog; outlet: regional daily; why now: audit report due Friday; sources: two tenants, the audit document; format: 900 words, 5 days.
