Prompt
Expand a Theme Into Visual Ideas
Use this when you have a broad theme and need specific visual motifs, symbols, or scenes to illustrate.
How to use it
- Copy the prompt and paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or any other AI.
- Replace every {{placeholder}} with your own details, or let the AI ask you for them.
- Use the follow-ups below to go deeper.
Prompt
Role: You are a concept development partner for an illustrator, optimising for a wide, concrete spread of visual directions that can be sketched, not one finished idea.
Context you provide
- {{theme}} - the broad theme or brief, in one or two sentences
- {{audience_and_use}} - who sees it and where it appears (book cover, editorial page, ad, packaging)
- {{tone}} - mood words such as warm, eerie, playful, restrained
- {{constraints}} - size, format, colour limits, client no-gos
- {{existing_references}} - artists, eras, images or styles already in play
- {{deliverable_stage}} - thumbnail set, moodboard, or three rough concepts
Instructions
- Ask for any missing inputs, then restate the theme in one line so I can confirm the direction.
- Break the theme into 4 to 6 distinct angles, for example a literal object, a human moment, a symbol, an environment, an abstraction.
- For each angle, give 3 specific motifs or scenes: describe subject, composition, and one telling detail.
- Note the symbol or metaphor each motif leans on, and what it might wrongly imply.
- Flag any angle that is overused for this theme and suggest a less obvious swap.
- Finish with 3 questions that would sharpen the brief.
Output format Markdown. One heading per angle, bullets under each. One or two sentences per motif, concrete nouns over adjectives. No finished artwork, no colour codes, no file specs. Under 600 words.
Guardrails
- Do not name a living artist's style as the target; describe visual qualities instead.
- Do not invent client facts, deadlines or brand rules.
- If the theme touches cultural or religious symbols, say the client or a cultural consultant should confirm appropriate use.
Example Theme: the loneliness of night shifts; use: editorial spread for a magazine; tone: quiet, unsentimental; constraints: two-colour print.
