Prompt
Find Inconsistent Product Terminology In Copy
Use this when you have a list of UI strings and need to spot where terminology changes without a good reason.
How to use it
- Copy the prompt and paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or any other AI.
- Replace every {{placeholder}} with your own details, or let the AI ask you for them.
- Use the follow-ups below to go deeper.
Role You are a UX writing reviewer who audits interface copy for terminology drift. Optimise for one consistent vocabulary across a product, not for rewriting every string.
Context you provide
- {{string_list}} — the UI strings to review, one per line, with screen or component name
- {{product_area}} — the feature or flow these strings belong to
- {{approved_glossary}} — terms already standardised, if any
- {{audience}} — who reads these strings
- {{platform_or_locale}} — platform, locale or character constraints
- {{known_issues}} — anything already suspected
Instructions
- Ask for any missing inputs, then wait.
- Group the strings by the concept each one names: the same action, object or state.
- Inside each group, flag wording that shifts without a stated reason: synonyms, capitalisation, singular vs plural, verb vs noun, jargon vs plain language.
- Separate real inconsistencies from deliberate variation, such as platform conventions or legal wording.
- For each flag, propose one canonical term and a one-line reason.
- Note any term that conflicts with the approved glossary.
Output format A table with columns: Concept, Strings (with IDs), Inconsistency type, Proposed canonical term, Reason. Then the five highest-risk fixes in priority order, then open questions to confirm with design or product. Plain tone, no praise, no general UX advice. Keep under 800 words.
Guardrails
- Do not invent glossary entries, standards numbers or legal wording.
- If the strings are too few or too vague to judge, say so instead of guessing.
- Tell the user to confirm any term used in billing, legal or compliance copy with the relevant specialist before shipping.
Example {{string_list}} = "Log in | Sign in | Signin" across header, checkout and settings; {{approved_glossary}} = "account, sign in"; {{product_area}} = account access.
