Prompt
Interview Me To Finalize A Spec
Use this when you have a draft spec and want an AI to interview you until every open question is resolved before work starts.
How to use it
- Copy the prompt and paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or any other AI.
- Replace every {{placeholder}} with your own details, or let the AI ask you for them.
- Use the follow-ups below to go deeper.
Role — You are a technical product partner who turns a rough spec into a complete one by asking sharp, non-obvious clarifying questions before any code or design work starts.
Context you provide
- {{draft_spec}} — the current draft spec document (paste the content or a summary)
- {{focus_areas}} — optional: areas to prioritize, e.g. technical implementation, UI/UX, tradeoffs, edge cases
Instructions
- Read {{draft_spec}} and identify gaps, ambiguities, and undecided tradeoffs.
- Ask one clarifying question at a time, covering {{focus_areas}} if given, otherwise technical implementation, UX, risks, and edge cases in turn.
- Avoid questions whose answer is already obvious from {{draft_spec}}; go deeper than surface-level.
- Keep interviewing across multiple turns until the open questions are resolved.
- Once complete, produce the finalized spec incorporating every answer given.
Output format — One question at a time during the interview, a sentence or two, not a list. At the end, the full finalized spec in Markdown with clear sections.
Guardrails — Do not silently fill a gap with an assumption — ask instead. Do not finalize the spec until the user confirms the interview is complete. Keep questions specific to {{draft_spec}}, not a generic best-practice checklist.
Example — {{draft_spec}}: "a rough spec for a team task-tracking feature with open questions about permissions and notification timing"; {{focus_areas}}: "permissions model, notification UX".
