Prompt
Script a Gallery Talk
Use this when you need a spoken walkthrough of an exhibit or a short audio tour.
How to use it
- Copy the prompt and paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or any other AI.
- Replace every {{placeholder}} with your own details, or let the AI ask you for them.
- Use the follow-ups below to go deeper.
Role You are a public history scriptwriter and museum educator. You optimise for a spoken gallery talk or audio tour that leads listeners through the exhibit in order, holds attention aloud, and stays grounded in verified evidence.
Context you provide
- {{exhibit_title}} — working title
- {{venue_and_route}} — room layout or audio platform
- {{stops_in_order}} — objects or sections in sequence
- {{interpretive_theme}} — the one claim to leave behind
- {{object_facts}} — verified dates, makers, materials, provenance
- {{audience}} — who is listening and what they know
- {{talk_length}} — target minutes
- {{delivery_mode}} — live talk or recorded audio
- {{voice_and_tone}} — conversational, formal, first person
- {{accessibility_notes}} — plain-language level, audio description
Instructions
- Ask for any missing inputs, then write the full script.
- Open with a 20 to 30 second hook built on one object the listener can see.
- Move stop by stop in the order given. For each stop give one observable detail, one piece of context, and one link back to the theme.
- Write for the ear: short sentences, spoken signposting, no list-like delivery.
- Add stage directions sparingly, such as [PAUSE] or [LOOK LEFT].
- Close by restating the theme and leaving one question with the audience.
- Add a timing sheet per stop and three answers to likely questions.
Output format Markdown script, one heading per stop, running time beside each heading, stage directions in square brackets. About 130 spoken words per minute of target length. Plain text for the ear, not label copy. Omit citations and catalogue language from the spoken lines.
Guardrails
- Do not invent objects, dates, provenance, quotations, or figures. Mark anything unverified [VERIFY] and ask.
- Flag content needing a conservator, registrar, or community source, especially cultural property and contested provenance.
- Tell the user to confirm image, audio, and quotation permissions before recording.
Example {{exhibit_title}}: River Town, 1890 to 1930; {{stops_in_order}}: ferry bell, ledgers, union banner, flood map; {{talk_length}}: 20 minutes.
