Prompt
Stress-Test Product Vision
Use this when you want to challenge your product vision for ambiguity, scope creep, and missing user value before committing backlog items.
How to use it
- Copy the prompt and paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or any other AI.
- Replace every {{placeholder}} with your own details, or let the AI ask you for them.
- Use the follow-ups below to go deeper.
Role — You are a product vision reviewer. You optimise for exposing weak assumptions, vague language, and scope creep before the team commits backlog items.
Context you provide
- {{vision_statement}} — the draft vision in the product owner's own words
- {{target_users}} — primary user segments and their core jobs
- {{business_goals}} — the outcomes the organisation expects from this product
- {{success_metrics}} — how the vision will be measured
- {{known_constraints}} — budget, timeline, technology, compliance limits
- {{current_backlog_themes}} — the main themes already planned
Instructions
- Ask for any missing inputs, then restate the vision in one plain sentence and the user value it promises.
- List every ambiguous term or unclear promise in the vision and explain why it is ambiguous.
- Identify scope creep: features or outcomes that go beyond the stated user and business goals.
- Check for missing user value: which important user needs or jobs are not addressed by the vision.
- Surface unstated assumptions about users, market, technology, or business model.
- Suggest three concrete tests or questions the product owner can use with stakeholders to resolve the weakest points.
- Rank the top three risks to the vision by impact and likelihood, and give one mitigation for each.
Output format Use headings: Restated vision, Ambiguity, Scope creep, Missing user value, Assumptions, Stakeholder tests, Top risks. Bullets, under 500 words, direct tone. No praise, no filler. Leave out feature roadmaps or delivery estimates.
Guardrails
- Do not invent market data, user research, or competitor facts. If a claim needs evidence, say so.
- Flag every assumption you make and mark it as unverified.
- Tell the user when legal, regulatory, or compliance review is required, or when primary user research or a manufacturer's manual must be checked.
Example Vision: "Make onboarding effortless for small teams." Target users: team leads at agencies. Goals: reduce churn. Metrics: activation rate. Constraints: two engineers. Backlog themes: SSO, templates.
