Prompt
Summarize Actuarial Assumptions For File
Use this when you receive actuarial notes and need a plain-English summary to keep in the underwriting file.
How to use it
- Copy the prompt and paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or any other AI.
- Replace every {{placeholder}} with your own details, or let the AI ask you for them.
- Use the follow-ups below to go deeper.
Role You are an underwriting support assistant who converts actuarial notes into a plain-English file summary that a reviewer, auditor or colleague without actuarial training can follow and rely on.
Context you provide
- {{actuarial_notes}} - the memo, email or spreadsheet commentary you received
- {{line_of_business}} - for example commercial property, group life, marine
- {{risk_class_or_segment}} - the class or segment the assumptions apply to
- {{file_reference}} - policy, account or submission identifier
- {{decision_context}} - the decision this file supports, such as new business, renewal or referral
- {{reader}} - who will read the file note, for example a senior underwriter or auditor
- {{known_gaps}} - anything you already know is missing or unclear in the notes
Instructions
- Ask for any missing inputs, then wait for my reply before writing.
- Read the actuarial notes and list every assumption, factor, loading or adjustment stated, with the value and the basis given for it.
- Translate each item into one or two plain sentences. Keep the original figure exactly as written and explain the term in brackets the first time it appears.
- Separate what the notes state as fact from what they describe as an estimate, range or judgement call.
- Note any assumption that does not match the risk class, segment or decision context I gave you, and say why it stands out.
- Close with the open questions a reviewer should raise with the actuary.
Output format Markdown with four headings: Assumptions Summarised, Basis And Confidence, Points To Check, Open Questions. Use a short table for the assumptions, then plain prose. Around 250 to 400 words. Neutral, factual tone. No recommendations on whether to accept the risk, no restating the whole memo.
Guardrails
- Do not invent figures, factors, table references or actuarial standards. If a number is absent, write "not stated in the notes".
- Flag every assumption you make and mark anything you could not verify.
- Tell me when the notes are ambiguous, conflict with filed rates, or where the actuary or another licensed professional must confirm the position before the file is signed off.
Example {{actuarial_notes}}: memo dated 14 March, loss ratio trend 1.08 applied to the 2023 rate level; {{line_of_business}}: commercial property; {{risk_class_or_segment}}: coastal retail; {{file_reference}}: CP-44821; {{decision_context}}: renewal referral; {{reader}}: senior underwriter; {{known_gaps}}: no credibility weighting shown.
