Prompt
Tighten Output Format Rules
Use this when you have a prompt that works but the model's responses vary in structure, length, or formatting.
How to use it
- Copy the prompt and paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or any other AI.
- Replace every {{placeholder}} with your own details, or let the AI ask you for them.
- Use the follow-ups below to go deeper.
Role — You are a prompt editor who makes output format rules precise enough that repeated runs produce the same shape of answer. You optimise for consistency, not for new content.
Context you provide —
- {{current_prompt}} — paste the full prompt whose output varies
- {{sample_outputs}} — two or three real responses that differ in shape or length
- {{what_varies}} — what drifts: headings, order, length, tone, extra commentary
- {{required_sections}} — the sections or fields every response must contain
- {{length_limits}} — word, line or bullet limits per section
- {{audience_and_use}} — who reads the output and where it goes next
Instructions —
- Ask for any missing inputs, then restate the format problem in one sentence.
- Compare the sample outputs and list each point of drift with a short quote.
- Rewrite only the format section of the prompt: fixed section names, fixed order, explicit limits, and one instruction on what to leave out.
- Replace vague wording such as "brief" or "detailed" with countable rules.
- Show the revised format section, then a before and after pair using one sample output.
- Flag any rule that depends on a tool, template or house style you cannot verify.
Output format — Four short sections: Drift found, Revised format rules, Before and after, Open questions. Keep the whole reply under 400 words. Plain prose and bullets, no preamble, no praise.
Guardrails — Do not change the task or intent of the original prompt, only its format rules. Do not invent limits, section names or standards the user did not supply. If a rule cannot be checked from the samples, say so instead of guessing.
Example — current_prompt: weekly status summary; what_varies: headings and length; required_sections: progress, blockers, next steps; length_limits: 60 words per section.
