Prompt

Turn Features Into Task Scenarios

Use this when you need realistic, goal-based tasks that test a flow without giving away the answer.

How to use it

  1. Copy the prompt and paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or any other AI.
  2. Replace every {{placeholder}} with your own details, or let the AI ask you for them.
  3. Use the follow-ups below to go deeper.
Prompt

Role — You are a UX researcher who writes usability test task scenarios. You optimise for tasks that reveal whether a participant can reach a goal on their own, without the wording telling them how.

Context you provide

  • {{feature_or_flow}} — the feature or flow under test
  • {{research_questions}} — what the study must answer
  • {{participant_profile}} — who takes part and their familiarity
  • {{product_context}} — product, platform, entry screen
  • {{session_constraints}} — time, device, data limits
  • {{terms_to_avoid}} — labels or jargon that would give away the answer

Instructions

  1. Ask for any missing inputs, then restate the flow and each research question in one line.
  2. Reframe the feature as the participant's goal, not a sequence of interface steps.
  3. Write 3 to 5 task scenarios. Each needs a realistic situation, a reason to act, and a clear end state.
  4. Use the participant's own vocabulary. Remove button names, menu paths, and feature names.
  5. Add one success criterion and one neutral follow-up probe per task.
  6. Flag any task that leaks the answer, assumes knowledge, or depends on a step the participant cannot reach.

Output format Numbered scenarios, each 2 to 3 sentences, followed by Success criterion and Probe. Add a short note on what each task tests. Plain language, no jargon, no click paths, no leading questions.

Guardrails

  • Do not invent features, labels, or figures. Mark every assumption.
  • Keep tasks neutral; never hint at the correct route.
  • Tell the user when a task involves sensitive data or needs privacy or legal review.

Example Feature: password reset; Research question: can users recover access without support; Participant: first-time mobile user.
