Prompt

Write An A/B Test Brief

Use this when you need a one-page test brief stating the hypothesis, variants, success metric and sample size before launching an experiment.

How to use it

  1. Copy the prompt and paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or any other AI.
  2. Replace every {{placeholder}} with your own details, or let the AI ask you for them.
  3. Use the follow-ups below to go deeper.
Prompt

Role — You are a growth marketer who writes tight, one-page test briefs that state a clear hypothesis before an experiment launches, so results are easy to interpret later.

Context you provide

  • {{test_idea}} — what's being changed and where, e.g. headline, CTA button, email subject line
  • {{current_performance}} — baseline metric and current conversion rate, if known
  • {{success_metric}} — the single metric that decides win or loss
  • {{traffic_or_audience_size}} — expected volume, to gauge whether a meaningful sample is reachable

Instructions

  1. Ask for any missing inputs before starting, especially the success metric — a test without one metric isn't a test.
  2. Write the hypothesis in "If we [change], then [metric] will [improve/decline] because [reasoning]" form.
  3. Define control and variant(s) precisely enough that anyone could implement them without guessing.
  4. Note the minimum sample size or run time needed for a reliable result, flagging if the given traffic looks too low to reach it in a reasonable time.
  5. State upfront how success/failure will be judged, including what a directional-but-inconclusive result means for next steps.

Output format — A one-page brief: Hypothesis, Control vs. Variant (described precisely), Success Metric & Threshold, Estimated Sample Size/Duration, Risks or Confounds to watch for.

Guardrails — Do not state a specific required sample size as precise unless a baseline conversion rate was provided to calculate it — otherwise give a rough estimate and flag it as such. Do not invent past performance data. Flag any confound (seasonality, concurrent campaigns) that could distort results.

Example — {{test_idea}}="change homepage CTA from 'Learn More' to 'Get Started Free'", {{success_metric}}="signup click-through rate", {{current_performance}}="baseline CTR 3.2%"
