AI agent for venture capitalists
Follow-On Reserve Planning Agent
A reserve allocation across the portfolio that fits remaining reserves and fund concentration limits
What it does
Reserve planning usually happens in a meeting with half the facts. Each quarter this agent reads each portfolio company's KPIs, runway and planned rounds and estimates its follow-on need, based on the fund's pro rata rights and its own rule for how much to put into a winner. It adds up the need and compares it with the reserves left. If the total is more than the reserves, it ranks companies by a score from traction, runway and expected round size, then tests alternate allocations. It checks that each allocation stays inside the fund's concentration limits and that the sum equals the reserves. The partners approve the plan. Edge case: a company that may raise early because it is growing fast is flagged for an earlier look rather than a spot in the plan.
How it works
Follow the arrows from top to bottom. The orange dashed arrow is the loop: when a check fails, the agent goes back and tries again.
Read the steps as a list
- Quarter closes and portfolio updates arrive
- Collect KPIs, runway and round plans for each company
- Estimate follow-on need for each company
- Sum the need and compare it with remaining reserves
- Does total need fit within reserves? If not: rank companies by score and test alternate allocations. Back to step 3.
- Allocate reserves in score order
- Does each allocation respect concentration limits and sum to reserves? If not: cap the overweight company and redistribute the remainder. Back to step 6.
- Flag companies likely to raise early or run short
- Partners approve the reserve planThe agent waits here for your OK.
- Reserve plan with scenarios
How it decides
Companies are scored on traction, runway and round size. Allocation goes first to the highest scores that pass limits until reserves are used.
- Estimate need as the pro rata share of the expected round
- Cap any single company at the fund's concentration limit
- Rank by traction, then runway, then round size
- Reserve nothing for companies with under 6 months of runway and no round plan, and flag them

What keeps you in control
It always asks you first
- The reserve plan

- Does not change scoring weights on its own
It stops when
- Done: partners approve a plan that fits reserves
