3DX Industries has formed a 3DX Advanced Systems Division to combine its existing manufacturing base with artificial intelligence, robotics, and intelligent physical systems. The move signals that the OTC-listed company intends to participate earlier and more deeply in product engineering and technology integration, rather than remaining a build-to-print supplier.
"Our objective is not to move away from manufacturing. It is to build more value around the manufacturing capabilities we already have," said Roger Janssen, President and Chief Executive Officer. He added that the company wants to manufacture for customers, take part in their product-development programs, and - where the opportunity warrants - develop proprietary or partnered product platforms.
What the new division will do
Advanced Systems is designed as a unified operating platform that spans technology development, engineering, prototyping, production planning, manufacturing, assembly, and product delivery. The company's existing manufacturing operations will continue serving established customers. The new division layers engineering, technology integration, and AI for Product Development on top of those capabilities.
The structure gives 3DX multiple routes to revenue. It can provide engineering and production services to outside technology companies, enter longer-term development programs, and pursue proprietary products and intellectual property where the economics make sense.
The PHILL pilot and intelligent systems
One early signal of intent is the PHILL™ AI-enabled service robot pilot-production program. The company described it as an example of the opportunity it sees at the intersection of product engineering, intelligent systems, and advanced manufacturing. Advanced Systems was created to chase that same intersection across a broader set of technologies and customers.
Integrating AI into physical production workflows also connects to the operational side of the business. The division's focus on robotics and autonomous systems ties directly to how manufacturers are rethinking AI for Operations on the factory floor.
Initial priorities
The company outlined three immediate focus areas for Advanced Systems:
- Recruiting qualified AI, robotics, and engineering leadership.
- Expanding the ability to support robotics, autonomous systems, and intelligent-product programs from concept through production.
- Developing reusable technology and engineering assets as new physical technologies move from development into production.
3DX's core manufacturing services - metal and industrial polymer additive manufacturing, precision CNC machining, design support, sourcing, finishing, and assembly - remain the foundation. The new division is an attempt to capture more of the value chain that sits above and around that production floor.
