Reddit Now Drives 40% of AI Citations Across ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity
5W Public Relations released the AI Platform Citation Source Index 2026 on May 1, analyzing 680 million citations across five major AI answer engines. The findings show that just 15 domains control 68% of all AI citation share-a concentration far more extreme than Google's PageRank ever produced.
Reddit is the top source across every major AI engine, cited at roughly 40% frequency. Wikipedia dominates ChatGPT specifically, accounting for 26% to 48% of its top-10 citation share. YouTube holds a 200x citation advantage over every other video source and leads on Google AI Overviews.
The index synthesized data from six major citation studies conducted between August 2024 and April 2026, covering ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude.
Journalism Matters Less Than User-Generated Content
Journalism accounts for 27% of all AI citations, rising to 49% on time-sensitive queries. But user-generated content outweighs it for everything else.
Citation patterns vary by platform. ChatGPT concentrates on Wikipedia, Reddit, Forbes, and Business Insider. Perplexity rewards primary sources, NIH/PubMed, and B2B authority sites. Claude leans toward The New York Times, The Atlantic, The New Yorker, and The Economist-with only 36% of its journalism citations from the past 12 months versus 56% for ChatGPT.
Citation Share Shifts in Weeks, Not Years
ChatGPT's Reddit citation share fell from roughly 60% to 10% in six weeks in late 2025 after a single Google parameter change. PR Newswire, Forbes, and Medium absorbed the displaced share.
This volatility means the old rules no longer apply. For 25 years, Google PageRank was the algorithm that mattered most in communications strategy. That era is over.
What Communications Teams Should Do Now
The index identifies seven priorities for 2026 programs:
- Audit presence across the top 15 sources before investing in the long tail
- Treat Wikipedia as infrastructure
- Build Reddit as a strategic evergreen channel
- Map journalism targets to platform-specific citation patterns
- Plan for volatility as a baseline condition
- Develop a verified strategy across all 50 sources to maintain visibility
- Monitor citation share changes weekly, not quarterly
Brands without a strategy across these sources are effectively invisible in the channel where consumer and B2B discovery now happens.
The index organizes the 50 sources into six functional categories: Community & Conversation, Encyclopedic & Reference, Professional & Identity, Video & Audio, Editorial & News, and Commerce & Review.
