Adobe Releases Substance 3D Updates With New Ray-Tracing Tools

Adobe rolled out updates to its Substance 3D suite, adding new capabilities to Designer, Sampler, Painter, and ZBrush. The releases focus on giving 3D designers and modelers faster workflows without requiring workarounds.

Substance 3D Designer version 16 includes an updated Shape Splatter v2 node that lets users scatter ray-traced 3D shapes with greater precision. Designers can now control shape, orientation, and scale for each instance and introduce more natural variation across surfaces.

The node also supports atlas inputs, which lets users distribute a wider range of shapes from a single source. This removes the need for manual adjustments that previously slowed down the design process.

OpenPBR Materials Arrive Across the Suite

Adobe integrated OpenPBR materials into Substance 3D Painter 12.1.0 Beta and Substance 3D Sampler 6. OpenPBR is a unified material model that ensures materials behave consistently across different tools and renderers.

The update includes new material templates for fuzz, coatings, and subsurface effects. These templates let creatives build physically accurate materials faster by reducing the setup time for complex surface properties.

For professionals working across multiple design applications, OpenPBR alignment means assets integrate more smoothly into modern production pipelines without requiring material adjustments between tools.
