OpenAI launches visual ads in ChatGPT during image generation
OpenAI will test visual ads inside ChatGPT's image tool this month, placing labeled spots on a platform reaching 1.2 billion weekly users.

OpenAI will begin testing visual advertisements inside ChatGPT's image generation tool later this month, placing clearly labeled ads separate from user-generated images. The U.S.-only pilot starts with an initial group of advertisers on a platform that now reaches 1.2 billion people weekly, according to the company.
The announcement, published October 5 on OpenAI's site, marks a significant expansion of the company's advertising business into one of ChatGPT's most-used features. Alongside the new ad format, OpenAI is rolling out broader measurement tools and partner integrations designed to give advertisers clearer performance data.
Measurement and attribution partners join the ecosystem
OpenAI is adding integrations with Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp for audience and campaign measurement. Attribution partners AppsFlyer and Triple Whale are also being brought into the fold, giving marketers direct conversion tracking from ChatGPT ad placements.
The company confirmed it is running brand suitability pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science. These tests will assess ad safety in conversational AI contexts without accessing private user data. The approach signals an attempt to match the verification standards advertisers expect from search and social platforms.
Ad momentum builds across markets
The visual ad format rollout follows a series of geographic expansions. OpenAI reported on September 29 that ChatGPT ads exceeded a 1% click-through rate in Brazil, Mexico, and Japan. A week earlier, the company expanded its ad program to seven Asian markets. The steady cadence of launches suggests advertising is becoming a core revenue stream rather than an experiment.
"Building advertising for the way people use AI," OpenAI's announcement stated, framing the effort around the conversational and multimodal behaviors unique to ChatGPT.
Why this matters for marketing and creative professionals
For marketers and sales teams, the addition of measurement partners like AppsFlyer and LiveRamp means ChatGPT ads are moving from awareness-only to performance-trackable inventory. If you run campaigns across search and social, this format could slot into attribution models sooner than expected. Creative teams should watch the visual ad execution closely - ads that appear alongside AI-generated images will compete for attention in a visually saturated interface, where clarity and labeling will matter as much as creative quality. Writers and content strategists working with generative AI tools should note that the platform where they prompt is now also the platform where brands advertise, which will shift the user experience over time.
