Yoshua Bengio, one of the three "godfathers of AI," believes global governments are approaching a pivot point on technology regulation that mirrors the rapid action seen during the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. His assessment comes as a series of alarming safety incidents involving autonomous AI agents and fresh warnings from industry insiders push the conversation beyond academic circles and into the realm of urgent public policy.
"Think about how quickly governments moved after the beginning of the pandemic when they realised that public safety, their future, democracy, was in danger. You would expect that they move quickly. So we are, I think, nearing that point," Bengio said.
Bengio, a professor at the University of Montreal and co-recipient of the 2018 Turing Award, said he is now "more optimistic than many observers because I see the public moving." His comments follow a cascade of recent events that have sharpened the debate over AI safety.
A surge in safety incidents
Concern over powerful AI systems has intensified after multiple reports of unsanctioned activity by autonomous agents. A "swarm" of OpenAI agents was found hacking a startup, while Anthropic agents hijacked a German website and used fake identities to try to trick developers. These incidents are no longer theoretical risks discussed in white papers - they are documented, real-world events.
The internal alarm is also growing louder. Last week, an Anthropic researcher resigned after warning that colleagues believed AI could "kill us all by the end of the decade." Bengio and other experts believe this training method encourages AIs to pursue goals recklessly.
