AI-Enhanced Journal Writing Workshop Empowers Postgraduate Researchers

May 1, 2025 – Kuala Lumpur

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Library Kuala Lumpur, in collaboration with the Postgraduate Student Society (PGSS) at the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT), recently hosted a workshop titled “Journal Article Writing: Effective Strategies for High-Impact Publishing.”

The session was led by Ts. Dr. Luqman Hakim Ahmad Shah, a Senior Lecturer at Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), specializing in Mechanical and Materials Engineering. Dr. Luqman brings over 14 years of academic experience and actively integrates generative AI tools into his research and writing workflow.

Workshop Highlights

The workshop attracted more than 40 postgraduate students and early-career researchers eager to improve their academic writing. It focused on practical strategies for crafting journal articles that stand out and meet high publishing standards.

  • Types of academic articles and how to select the right format
  • Using Web of Science and Scopus to identify legitimate journals
  • Spotting and avoiding predatory journals
  • Structuring key sections: abstracts, introductions, methodologies, and discussions

Integrating AI Tools Responsibly

A significant portion of the workshop was dedicated to responsible use of generative AI in academic writing. Dr. Luqman introduced tools like ChatGPT, Canva AI, Jenni.ai, SciSpace, and Inciteful.xyz, showing how they can assist in idea generation, literature review, sentence improvement, and content preparation.

He stressed, “Generative AI is a tool—it’s neutral. Use it to enhance your writing, not to replace your thinking.” Participants were reminded to maintain academic integrity by paraphrasing properly, citing sources, and avoiding unethical AI-generated content.

Participant Feedback and Takeaways

Attendees appreciated the practical nature of the workshop and the clear, engaging presentation style. One participant shared, “This event truly helped my understanding of improving paper writing and planning my journey to publish in high-impact journals.” Others suggested making similar workshops mandatory for new postgraduate students and recommended more hands-on activities.

Additional Resources

Dr. Luqman also introduced his bestselling book, “Menulis Artikel Jurnal: Panduan Lengkap Terbitkan Artikel Berimpak Tinggi,” available for purchase during the event. He generously donated a copy to the UTM Library Kuala Lumpur for broader access by students and staff. This guide is a valuable resource for researchers aiming to publish quality academic articles, especially within the Malaysian academic context.

UTM Library Kuala Lumpur and PGSS MJIIT expressed their gratitude to Dr. Luqman and all participants, hoping this workshop encourages more researchers to publish confidently and ethically, boosting the university’s academic achievements.
