AI tools drive a $206 boost in back-to-school spending as parents hunt for deals

The 2026 back-to-school season has exposed a sharp divide in consumer behavior, with digitally equipped parents planning to spend nearly double what tech-free households will, according to Deloitte's 19th annual back-to-school survey. The average parent plans to spend $557 per child, but the 29% of parents who use social media, search and AI together expect to spend $737 per child - a $206 jump compared to those using only social media and search.

Inflation remains the top concern for parents this year, per Epsilon data. That pressure, combined with wider access to chatbots and AI tools, has created a shopper who is willing and able to hunt aggressively for deals. Loyalty programs are one beneficiary: 46% of parents plan to use them to cut costs, up 7% from a year ago.

AI becomes a deal-hunting engine

Nearly half of parents (46%) used AI to compare prices and find deals before buying this season, according to Epsilon's "2026 back-to-school spending trends" report. Usage rates were nearly identical between parents of grade-school children and those with college students. Price comparison was the top AI use case at 53%, followed by deal discovery (49%), initial research (37%), shopping list generation (33%), and product and brand comparisons (32%).

For marketers, the rise of AI for Marketing presents a measurement problem. The Interactive Advertising Bureau found little standardization among more than 20 AI vendors' methodologies and results. Questions also persist about how user-generated content on platforms like YouTube and Reddit influences visibility inside AI tools.

The 'hyper value-seeker' emerges

Deloitte's research identified a new consumer profile: the "hyper value-seeker." Parents who use no technology plan to spend $381 per child, while those layering AI into their shopping toolkit are approaching double that amount. Brands have adjusted. JCPenney increased marketing around price guarantees. American Eagle and Target diversified their influencer rosters to connect with a broader range of consumers.

College spending is projected to rise even as grade-school spending stays flat, per National Retail Federation data. Urban Outfitters targeted this group in August with its first connected TV commercial, "All Together Now," which focuses on campus life and gameday culture.

Kids hold the brand power

Teenagers exert massive influence over household brand preferences. While 80% of teens say their parents shape their brand affinities, the relationship flows both ways: 91% of parents with teenagers said their kids influence their own brand likes and dislikes, making children the single biggest factor in parental brand preference, according to HarrisX and Allison Worldwide data.

Social media drives how those teens discover brands. TikTok is the top platform for teenage girls, with 42% using it. Marketers trying to reach this demographic are increasingly looking at AI Social Media Courses to understand how short-form video and AI-native consumers intersect.

Why this matters for marketers

The 2026 back-to-school data confirms that AI is not just a shopping tool - it is a spending accelerator. Parents who use AI spend more, but they also expect more: better deals, sharper price comparisons, and personalized value. Marketers who ignore the measurement gap on AI platforms risk pouring budget into channels with no clear ROI. The simultaneous rise of Gen Alpha as an AI-native consumer class and the dominance of TikTok for product discovery means brand strategies built for millennial parents will miss the mark with their children.
