AI Now Makes the First Hiring Decision for Most Job Applicants
Seventy-three percent of employers are using AI tools to filter job applications, with algorithms rejecting candidates before any human reviews their resume, according to a new report from MyPerfectResume.
Half of the employers using AI said the technology automatically rejects up to 50% of incoming applications. For many job seekers, the first decision-maker they face is no longer a recruiter-it's an algorithm.
The Scale of Automated Rejection
The widespread adoption of AI screening reflects employers' response to a surge in job applications. Job seekers themselves are using AI tools to mass-apply for openings, forcing hiring teams to find ways to manage volume.
Employers have also turned to other methods: face-to-face hiring exercises and pay-to-apply systems.
The Accuracy Problem
Forty-seven percent of employers acknowledged that AI may have filtered out candidates they would have advanced, according to the report. The speed of automated screening comes at the cost of accuracy.
Jasmine Escalera, a career expert at MyPerfectResume, said the stakes are high when more than half of employers use these tools. "The concern is that speed and efficiency are being prioritised over accuracy and fairness, and that can have real consequences for qualified candidates," she said.
The report found that "employers gain efficiency but risk overlooking candidates who don't perfectly match algorithmic criteria."
What HR Leaders Need to Do
Organizations face a balancing act: using AI to manage application volume while maintaining fairness and human oversight. Without deliberate safeguards, qualified candidates disappear from consideration before anyone reviews their qualifications.
HR professionals managing recruitment systems should ensure that AI tools are audited for bias and that human review remains part of the process for borderline cases. The speed of automation should not override the accuracy of hiring decisions.
