The U.S. Air Force is searching for an artificial intelligence agent that can centralize data from the roughly 60 disconnected systems supporting its aging Minuteman III nuclear missile fleet, according to a request for information published July 24. The service must keep 400 missiles ready to launch at all times, a mission with zero room for failure, and the current manual approach to managing parts and maintenance data is becoming unsustainable as the replacement missile program faces years of delays.

The MMIII program stores key data across disparate sources, from local hard drives to shared networks, but lacks a central system to govern them all. That forces airmen to spend considerable manhours on tasks like assessing when parts need replacement. The Air Force wants an AI tool that can pull data from design drawings, maintenance logs, and other areas, then visualize it in a single, unified interface. Previous attempts to create a centralized digital ecosystem for the MMIII lifecycle have failed, the notice states, citing "a range of challenges."

What the Air Force wants from an AI agent

The Air Force expects the AI tool to collate data in near-real time and reduce manual compilation by a measurable amount, with the specific cut to be negotiated with a successful contractor. The project's initial phase will cover controlled unclassified information, with the possibility of later expanding to secret data.

Responses to the request for information were due today. The notice makes no mention of the AI agent having any role in launching or operating the nuclear missile fleet, and officials have repeatedly said those decisions belong to humans.

Wider Pentagon push for AI tools

Separately, before the announced release, the Pentagon awarded Air, formerly known as Govini, $31 million for work supporting the Air Force's ICBM fleet. The company said in a July 15 release that the contract will "provide an integrated view of the ICBM industrial base and supply chains to identify current and future supply chain gaps and assess risks." It is unclear how that platform might interact with the AI agent the Air Force is now seeking.

The Defense Department under Secretary Pete Hegseth has championed budding AI tools and is hiring hundreds of software engineers to boost its software abilities. The military services are experimenting with AI for many tasks, including aircraft operations. The Air Force recently marked milestones for AI integration with planes, using a modified autonomous F-16 called the X-62 VISTA. In one demo disclosed last week, the aircraft's AI agent analyzed live data from an infrared sensor and directed the jet to intercept an airborne target in real time.
