Alpha School brings its AI-based two-hour learning model to Kirkland this fall

AI-powered school opens in Seattle area, promises academics in two hours a day

Alpha School, a private school chain using AI to compress core academics into two-hour daily sessions, will open its first Seattle-area location in Kirkland this fall. The school has leased space at 620 Fifth Ave. S., near Google's Kirkland campus, with capacity for up to 150 students.

The model frees the remaining school day for life skills, projects, and character-building activities. Students have no homework by design, giving them time for sports and other pursuits outside school.

Alpha School co-founder MacKenzie Price said the company has seen regional interest for some time but needed to secure real estate. She described Seattle as "very forward-thinking" about innovation and education.

How the model works

The school uses adaptive software that diagnoses what each student has mastered, then delivers lessons matched to their level and pace. Alpha employs staff called "guides" rather than teachers, paid above typical teacher salaries, at a 5-to-1 student-to-guide ratio.

Guides handle mentorship and motivation while the software delivers instruction. Price drew a distinction between this approach and passive screen time. "There's a huge difference between students scrolling TikTok or playing video games all day, and receiving a one-to-one, mastery-based tutoring experience," she said.

The school explicitly excludes chatbots from core instruction, which Price called "cheat bots."

Results and skepticism

Alpha reports its students score in the top percentiles on the NWEA MAP, a standardized test used nationwide. Some educators have questioned whether learning can accelerate as dramatically as Alpha claims, and whether strong outcomes reflect the students enrolled rather than the school's methods.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently mentioned meeting Alpha School's team, calling the approach "fascinating to rethink what education will look like in the future." He suggested that building a new university or pedagogy could become the next major startup success story.

Summer programs and fall enrollment

Alpha will run eight-week summer programs on Microsoft's Redmond campus starting in late June, open to the public at $1,500 per week. Microsoft employees receive a 50% discount.

Fall tuition in Kirkland hasn't been set. Families who enroll in the first year as "founding families" will receive a $10,000 discount.
