Amazon Commits AUD $20 Billion to Expand AI and Cloud Infrastructure in Australia

Amazon announced a significant investment of AUD $20 billion to develop and maintain its data centre infrastructure in Australia between 2025 and 2029. This is the largest global technology investment publicly declared in Australian history. The funding is aimed at meeting the rising demand for cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) services, while supporting the growth of AI capabilities across the country.

This investment supports the Australian Government’s strategy to use AI to boost productivity and economic growth. It will allow Amazon Web Services (AWS) customers and partners to access advanced cloud and AI tools locally, ensuring compliance with Australian data residency and regulatory requirements.

Expanding Data Centres and Technology Reach

AWS has been operating in Australia since 2012, starting with its Asia Pacific (Sydney) Region. It later added the Melbourne Region and local zones in Perth to strengthen its presence nationwide. Recently, AWS introduced Amazon Bedrock, a generative AI service, in Sydney and partnered with the Australian Government for a “Top Secret” AWS Cloud to support national security and defence efforts.

Matt Garman, CEO of AWS, highlighted the long-term commitment behind this investment: “We are expanding our world-class data centres, increasing renewable energy use, and supporting Australia’s goal to be a global AI leader. AI offers a transformative opportunity, and we want to help Australian organisations of all sizes take full advantage of it.”

Supporting Renewable Energy Projects

To power the expanding data centre infrastructure sustainably, Amazon is investing in three new solar farms in Victoria and Queensland, providing over 170 megawatts of capacity. These projects complement eight existing solar and wind farms in New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria.

Combined, all 11 renewable projects are expected to generate more than 1.4 million megawatt hours of carbon-free energy annually—enough to power about 290,000 Australian homes. Between 2020 and 2022, Amazon invested roughly AUD $467 million in Australian renewable energy projects. In 2024, it ranked as the third-largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy in Australia and remains the largest globally.

Research from Accenture shows that moving AI workloads to AWS can cut carbon emissions by up to 94% compared to traditional on-premises data centres, underscoring the environmental impact of the move.

Remarks from Australian Prime Minister

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese attended the announcement and welcomed the investment. He said, “This is the largest investment from a global technology provider we have seen. It offers a major opportunity to build AI capabilities with secure and resilient infrastructure, creating jobs and enabling innovation across Australia.”

Building AI Skills and Workforce Capacity

The investment coincides with the launch of AWS AI Spring Australia, a set of programmes designed to accelerate AI adoption. This includes the AWS Generative AI Accelerator for startups and the AWS AI Launchpad for enterprises beginning their AI journey.

AWS is also working with educational institutions, industry, and government to provide targeted training. Since 2017, AWS has trained over 400,000 Australians in digital skills through programmes like the Work-Based Learning Program and the AI Ready initiative, which aims to train two million people globally in AI skills by next year.

Industry Impact and Future Outlook

AWS supports hundreds of thousands of organisations across Australia, including major players like ANZ Bank, Atlassian, Canva, Commonwealth Bank, Telstra, Optus, and Westpac. The expanded infrastructure will enhance their access to cloud and AI technologies, improving operational efficiency and innovation capability.

Amazon remains committed to working closely with government, private sector, and academic partners to develop Australia’s AI ecosystem and nurture future tech talent.
